Maya’s Road Trip Up Island

Back to IDEAS

As UVIC students, they are looking for deals, deals deals!
Birthday Promos are recommended (), confirmed () or featured ()

bowlingDerrick and Maya took a Friday off last November to celebrate Maya’s Birthday. They were coming up-island for the weekend anyway to be with Maya’s family so they decided to allow some extra time for a Mappy Birthday Road Trip on the way up and miss the Colwood Crawl.

On the way out of town, Maya got a complimentary cappuccino at Starbucks (), and then picked up an Americano at Blenz () for Derrick.

In the Cowichan Valley, the car practically pulled itself over to Pioneer House Restaurant – they don’t have a Birthday deal but the portions are big enough for sharing, and the kids needed to save room for more road trip stops anyway… like Menchies Frozen Yogurt in Duncan ().

In Nanaimo, they shared a smoothie from Booster Juice (), then Maya used her coupon from Payless Shoes for a great discount () at Woodgrove Centre. In Courtenay’s London Drugs (), they got 5 bucks off a cell phone charger so they could charge up and let Maya’s family know they were almost home.

Maya’s big family got everyone together at Codes County Lanes in Courtenay for a Cosmic Bowling Party followed by a free party room rental ().

Go Go Grandma

cakeIt has become a Birthday tradition to celebrate Lorna’s Birthday every February. Since she already has the day off (she’s 97!) – it’s usually up to the rest of us to book a day away from work to come up-island for a Mappy good time.

This year, we got together for a great breakfast at Beechwood Corner Cafe in Willow Point, just south of Campbell River.

Grandma’s Benny arrived with a candle and there was a special treat (on the house) to follow ().

Take it off!
Birthday Promos are recommended (), confirmed () or featured ()

SUPIt took years to convince Gwynne to start taking her mid-summer Birthday off work. She used to say silly things like “I would take it off if it was on a Friday.. but it’s on a Tuesday this year so I might as well work”.

“WAIT – what?!!”, says Mappy Birthday to that. “So once every 7 years… you deserve a special day?! What are ya – some kinda cactus flower!” Mappy Birthday says you need to take your Birthday off work every year!

Here’s what Gwynne did this year for her Mappy Birthday:
6:00 AM – Sunrise Bike Ride
7:00 AM – Walk the doggies
7:30 AM – Free latte at Starbucks ()
9:00 AM – Ogden Point Stroll with BFF Darcie
9:45 AM – Breakfast at Nourish ()
11:00 AM – Hillside Mall: The Body Shop (), Payless Shoes (), David’s Tea ()
1:00 PM – 2 for 1 Blizzard () – take home for the kids
1:15 PM – Dog Day Afternoon nap
3:00 PM – Tried SUP Yoga in Brentwood Bay ()
5:00 PM – Amazing Dinner at Brentwood Bay Pub, treated to complimentary chocolate truffles for dessert ().

So yeaaahh, Gwynne doesn’t work on her Birthday anymore.

Relax in the Valley
Birthday Promos are recommended (), confirmed () or featured ()

latteLeigh-Ann is looking forward to a day off in the middle of the week to enjoy a West Coast day in October. She plans to have a Destination Birthday in the Comox Valley with her teenage kids.

She will start her Mappy Birthday with an early run up Ryan Road Hill taking in that gorgeous view of the Comox Glacier on the way back down. After the run, she’ll pick up a complimentary coffee at Starbucks ().

With the teenagers awake when she gets back to the hotel, they will all head over to Booster Juice for breakfast smoothies – Leigh-Ann’s is free (). Next stop is Seal Bay Nature Park to take in the fresh ocean air.

Back to the hotel for a hot tub, then lunch at Locals () followed by a quiet afternoon reading the novel Leigh-Ann bought on the ferry yesterday. When 4 PM rolls around, it’s time to think about making a dinner reservation. The word on the street is that Atlas Cafe () welcomes birthday guests. It doesn’t get better than a farm-fresh fall day in the Valley.

Stopped by a Starbucks after the game and picked up a complimentary latte (). Still feeling sporty, Greg joined his wife Jen for an intro to stand-up paddleboard lesson and was treated to a nice Birthday discount () while exploring the Victoria Harbour.

Greg used his membership in the “Love Your Body” Rewards Program () at the Body Shop in Hillside Mall and used his points to pickup a great moisturizer to soothe the mild windburn from the SUP. He then treated Jen to a David’s Tea () using his Frequent Steeper’s card.

His outdoorsy birthday built up an appetite for steak and it’s hard to beat The Keg (with two locations in Victoria). The staff sang and Greg even shared his complimentary slice of Billy Miner pie ().
